Understanding Active and Passive Voice with 20 CTET MCQs
Voice (Active and Passive Voice) Overview
In English grammar, voice refers to the relationship between the subject and the action expressed by the verb. There are two voices: Active Voice and Passive Voice.
1. Active Voice
In the active voice, the subject performs the action of the verb. The sentence structure typically follows Subject + Verb + Object.
- Example: “The teacher teaches the students.”
- Here, the subject (teacher) is performing the action (teaches) on the object (students).

2. Passive Voice
In the passive voice, the subject receives the action of the verb. The structure is Subject + form of “be” + Past Participle + (by + Agent).
- Example: “The students are taught by the teacher.”
- In this case, the action (taught) is being received by the subject (students), and the agent (teacher) is optionally mentioned.
Rules for Changing from Active to Passive:
- The object of the active voice becomes the subject of the passive voice.
- The verb “to be” is added before the main verb, in accordance with the tense.
- The main verb is changed into its past participle form.
- The subject of the active voice becomes the agent, which is introduced with the word “by” (optional).
